The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is the sole scientific agency of the US Department of the Interior. The USGS employees approximately 8,600 people to study the landscape of the United States, its natural resources, and the natural disasters that threaten it. The organization has four major science disciplines: biology, geography, geology, and hydrology.

Over a four-year period, UCD conducted numerous projects for the USGS that included expert review, design consulting, and user-based testing.
